Plank Repairs (II)

Tern Boatworks have completed the repair on Wing's garboard plank.  The work was somewhat more involved than they initially expected: a larger portion of the garboard plank needed to be replaced than they first thought and shaping the new piece of mahogany to fit into the space was rather complicated.

This is the 12:1 scarf to attach the new section of the garboard plank.

Here is the new garboard end being held in place while the glue on the scarf sets.  The fasteners are temporary.  The new garboard end has been carved to shape rather than bent into place so there is no stress on it.

And here is the final result with the plank bronze-fastened, plugged, caulked, and painted.

The work on the hood-ends at the bow has also been completed.  They simply needed to be refastened and repainted.

This completes the major hull repairs but there is still lots of work to do to get her ready for next spring.  The big jobs are to install the new engine and to replace a large number of over-long screws that were driven up through the headliner to hold down the teak deck planks but are now protruding all the way up through the deck.  I also need to do some electrical work, re-fasten along the bottom of the garboard on both sides, and do a bunch of other small tasks.  Lots to keep me busy over the winter!
